Different corners…
It never ceases to amaze me how every chair is so different even when so similar in style and size. Each one brings its own

Another year of looking forward to all the chairs, stools and commissions that I will be working on and also the ones that are still to be revealed! Started 2024 with a Sussex and ended the year with a pair of Sussex chairs! Lots more Sussex chairs in between plus lots of individually fantastic chairs and stools – rush, seagrass, lapping cane and centre cane, chair cane and cane webbing with so many unusual, quirky, poignant, interesting, happy stories attributed to each and every one of them. A big thank you to everyone for entrusting me with them all. Still a little bit of a lead time involved but generally I manage to get to everyone in the end. Thank you.
Creating natural rush seating for all types of chairs, stools and furniture. Using the traditional method of hand twisting rushes together to form one continuous strand to weave with. The types of chairs that I work on can be very varied ranging from antique/vintage through to contemporary, evoking nostalgia and modernity, encompassing the traditional and continental styles of rush patterns.
Rushing a chair seat demands total concentration, the methodology and repeat movements of joining and twisting and assessing each coil makes you feel very absorbed in the moment. Taking the time to consider each coil and how it sits always trying to aim for perfection. I enjoy the texture of rush and feel very peaceful when I am on task. Additionally, I also undertake the re-caning of chairs using standard traditional methods and styles, plus weaving seagrass patterns on stools.
is where I like to record how things are created and produced, showing the start and the finish, using photographs to capture all the different stages. I believe this adds to the authenticity of each item being made, giving it relevance and a personal endorsement.
